Philodendron 'Pink Princess'

  • The Philodendron 'Pink Princess,' or Philodendron erubescens 'Pink Princess,' is a cultivated variety of the Philodendron erubescens. It is a hybrid plant, with the original species native to the tropical rainforests of Colombia. It is part of the extensive Araceae family, which includes other popular houseplants like the Monstera and Pothos.

The 'Pink Princess' is celebrated for its truly exceptional foliage. The leaves are a dark, glossy green adorned with vibrant splashes and patches of bubblegum pink variegation. Each leaf is a unique piece of art, with the amount and pattern of pink varying widely from one leaf to another.

This plant is considered to have a moderate growth rate. With proper care, it can grow several inches in height each year. Providing it with a support to climb will also encourage larger leaf growth.

  • The key to maintaining the 'Pink Princess's' vibrant pink variegation is bright, indirect light. Inadequate light will cause the new growth to revert to solid green, losing its special coloration. An east or west-facing window is ideal. Direct, harsh sunlight can scorch the leaves.

Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 inches of soil feel dry to the touch. The plant prefers to be slightly on the drier side rather than constantly wet. Overwatering is a common cause of issues, so ensure the pot has drainage holes.

Use a chunky, well-draining soil mix that allows for good aeration. An aroid-specific mix or a combination of standard potting soil, orchid bark, perlite, and a bit of coco coir is a great choice.

The Philodendron 'Pink Princess' thrives in warm temperatures, ideally between 65°F and 80°F (18°C - 27°C). It should be protected from cold drafts and temperatures below 60°F (15°C) can cause damage.
