Variegated Devil's Backbone Euphorbia Catus

  • The Variegated Devil's Backbone, also known as the Variegated Zig-Zag Plant or Devil's Backbone, is an eye-catching, unique succulent that brings structural interest and bright color to any collection. The species Euphorbia tithymaloides is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, including parts of Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.

It is named for its thick, woody, zig-zagging stems that resemble a backbone. The 'Variegata' cultivar features fleshy, pointed leaves edged in creamy white or pink, which often turn a bright pink or red when exposed to strong light or cooler temperatures.

Like all plants in the Euphorbia genus, the Variegated Devil's Backbone contains a milky white latex sap that is toxic if ingested.

  • Bright light to direct sun is best, especially for the variegated form. Strong light encourages the bright pink/red blushing on the leaves and helps maintain a compact, upright shape.

Drought tolerant. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water sparingly, especially during the dormant winter months.

Requires extremely well-draining soil, similar to what you would use for cacti and other succulents.

The plant prefers temperatures between 65°F and 85°F (18°C - 29°C). It is sensitive to cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F can cause damage.
