Syngonium wendlandii 'Black Velvet'
-
A highly attractive, tropical climbing or trailing plant (a member of the Araceae family, like Philodendrons) prized for its velvety, dark foliage.
Known as perhaps the most unique Syngonium, it features very dark, very slender, very pointed leaves with a striking, velvety texture, dramatically patterned with a contrasting white central stripe.
Syngoniums produce spathe and spadix flowers (typical of Aroids), though flowering is rare indoors and not the reason for cultivation.
-
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves, but ensure adequate light to maintain the dark color and prevent legginess.
Keep soil consistently moist but never soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry.
Requires well-draining, peat-rich potting mix.
Thrives in warm, indoor environments, ideally between 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Protect from cold drafts.
This plant should be fertilized once per month during spring, summer and fall with diluted houseplant fertilizer.
Toxic if ingested (due to calcium oxalate crystals). Keep away from pets and children.
-
Suitable for outdoor growth in USDA Zones 10-12 (otherwise grown as a houseplant).
