Sempervivum Karola
-
Sempervivum 'Karola' is an evergreen, alpine perennial succulent. It forms medium-sized, symmetrical rosettes of pointed, fleshy leaves. The foliage is typically a soft mint green at the base, flushing into a deep, rich mahogany or brownish-red at the tips.
As a member of the Sempervivum genus, its ancestors originate from the high-altitude mountain ranges of Europe, specifically the Alps and the Carpathians. These plants are built to survive in rocky crevices where other plants would struggle.
Like all Sempervivums, 'Karola' is monocarpic. When a rosette reaches maturity (usually after several years), it sends up a thick, alien-looking flower spike. The blooms are star-shaped and typically a soft rose-pink with darker centers. While the flowering rosette will die after blooming, it ensures the colony's survival by producing numerous "chicks" (offsets) beforehand.
-
Thrives in full sun to partial shade. At least 6 hours of sunlight is necessary to bring out the intense dark red tips. In very hot summer regions, morning sun and afternoon shade are ideal.
Requires excellent drainage. Use a gritty succulent mix or garden soil amended with perlite, pumice, or fine gravel. It does not like "wet feet."
Follow the "soak and dry" method. Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry. 'Karola' is highly drought-tolerant and requires almost no water during the winter months.
Feed lightly once or twice during the growing season with a diluted, low-nitrogen fertilizer. Overfeeding can cause leggy growth and weaken the plant.
Non-toxic and safe for cats, dogs, and horses.
