Sempervivum heuffelii ‘Xanthoheuff’

  • Sempervivum ‘Xanthoheuff’ or Sempervivum heuffelii ‘Xanthoheuff’ is a vibrant and color-shifting hens and chicks variety that really shines in the garden. In bright sun, its medium-sized rosettes glow in shades of yellow to fresh green, then slowly deepen into rich purple tones as winter arrives. Over time, this plant forms a neat, well-organized cluster, giving it a clean and polished look in outdoor planters or rock gardens.

Sempervivum heuffelii are native to mountainous regions of Eastern Europe and are known for being especially tough and resilient. ‘Xanthoheuff’, developed by Skrocki, stands out for its bold seasonal color changes and strong structure. This variety prefers excellent drainage and does best with a layer of gravel top dressing to keep moisture away from the base of the leaves.

Unlike other hens and chicks that spread by stolons, S. heuffelii produces new rosettes by dividing. The mother plant slowly splits into multiple rosettes, forming a tidy clump that can be left to grow naturally or carefully separated and transplanted. After several years, a mature rosette may bloom with yellow flowers and then die, but its offsets will continue to grow and carry on the cluster.

  • Full sun to partial shade.

Gritty, well-draining soil. Thrives in rocky or sandy mixes with low organic matter.

Water only when the soil is completely dry. Extremely drought-tolerant; prone to rot if kept damp.

Feed lightly once or twice during the growing season with a diluted, low-nitrogen fertilizer. Overfeeding can cause leggy growth and weaken the plant.

Non-toxic to humans, cats, and dogs.
