Sempervivum heuffelii 'Mystique'
-
Sempervivum heuffelii ‘Mystique’ (Nixon) forms a fairly large rosette with reddish-brown leaves and a hint of green at the center. Fine, silvery cilia line the leaf margins, giving the rosette a subtle glowing effect. As temperatures drop, this variety can turn deep purple to near-black, especially in winter.
Sempervivum heuffelii originate from mountainous regions of Europe and are adapted to bright sun, rocky soils, and cold winters. Unlike other Sempervivum, heuffelii types divide at the center rather than producing stolons, forming tight clusters of new rosettes over time. After several years, a mature rosette may bloom and die, while its offsets continue growing.
-
Full sun to partial sun
Gritty, well-draining soil is essential. Use a cactus and succulent mix with 50%-70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite.
Water infrequently. Allow soil to dry out completely between waterings. Avoid letting water sit in the rosette to prevent rot.
Non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses (Pet-friendly).
