Sempervivum heuffelii 'Dorado'
-
Sempervivum heuffelii ‘Dorado’, commonly known as Hens and Chicks, is a striking, cold-hardy succulent celebrated for its rich golden-yellow to chartreuse rosettes accented with deep red or burgundy tips. This bold color combination and compact, architectural form make it a standout choice for rock gardens, alpine troughs, and outdoor succulent displays.
Sempervivum heuffelii ‘Dorado’ is a hardy perennial succulent in the Crassulaceae family, commonly grouped under Hens and Chicks. Unlike many Sempervivum types, heuffelii varieties do not produce offsets on runners; instead, they form tight clumps through basal division, giving them a cleaner, more sculptural look.
Like all Sempervivum, each rosette is monocarpic, meaning it flowers once and then dies. When mature, ‘Dorado’ sends up a dramatic flower stalk with star-shaped blooms in shades of pink to reddish-purple. After flowering, surrounding rosettes continue to grow and fill in the space.
-
Thrives in full sun. To achieve that signature deep mahogany color, it needs plenty of direct light. In extremely hot desert climates, it can handle light afternoon shade.
Requires sharp drainage. Use a rocky succulent mix or a blend of potting soil with at least 50% grit (pumice, perlite, or pea gravel). It loves being tucked into rock crevices.
Drought-tolerant. Use the "soak and dry" method. It is very sensitive to standing water, especially in the winter; ensure the soil never stays soggy.
Feed lightly once or twice during the growing season with a diluted, low-nitrogen fertilizer. Overfeeding can cause leggy growth and weaken the plant.
Non-toxic and safe for pets and children.
