Sempervivum heuffelii 'Chocolate Sundae'

  • Sempervivum heuffelii ‘Chocolate Sundae’ (Bronow) forms a bright red rosette with a lime green center, creating strong color contrast throughout the growing season. The leaves are edged with a fine fringe of cilia, adding texture to the compact rosette. In colder weather, the coloration deepens to rich maroon tones, especially during winter.

Sempervivum heuffelii originate from mountainous regions of Europe and are adapted to bright sun, rocky soils, and cold winters. Unlike stolon-forming Sempervivum, heuffelii types divide at the center, developing neat clusters of new rosettes over time. After several years, a mature rosette may bloom and die, while its offsets continue growing.

  • Full sun to partial sun

Gritty, well-draining soil is essential. Use a cactus and succulent mix with 50%-70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite.

Water infrequently. Allow soil to dry out completely between waterings. Avoid letting water sit in the rosette to prevent rot.

Non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses (Pet-friendly).

  • Zones 4-10
