Sempervivum Gulle Dame
-
The Sempervivum 'Gulle Dame' is a mat-forming, evergreen perennial succulent. It grows in a tight, symmetrical rosette of fleshy, pointed leaves that are maroon to reddish-purple with a distinctive green or amber base.
Its primary appeal is its dynamic color shifts. In spring and summer, the leaves display intense purple-red hues, while the leaf margins (edges) are often adorned with delicate, fine white hairs (cilia) that give it a slightly "frosted" or silvery appearance.
During the summer, mature "Hen" rosettes send up a thick, leafy stalk topped with a cluster of star-shaped, pink flowers.
-
Thrives in full sun. It needs significant light to maintain its deep maroon color; in shade, it will turn green and lose its compact shape.
Requires gritty, well-draining soil. A dedicated cactus or succulent mix with added perlite, pumice, or fine gravel is perfect. It dislikes "wet feet," especially in winter.
Exceptionally hardy, covering Zones 3–9. It can survive temperatures as low as -30°F (-34°C), making it one of the few succulents that can stay outdoors year-round in cold climates.
Very drought-tolerant. Use the "soak and dry" method—water only when the soil is completely dry. In winter, reduce watering to almost nothing as the plant goes dormant.
Feed lightly once or twice during the growing season with a diluted, low-nitrogen fertilizer. Overfeeding can cause leggy growth and weaken the plant.
Non-toxic to cats and dogs.
