Sempervivum globiferum ssp. hirtum ‘Borealis’

  • Sempervivum globiferum ssp. hirtum ‘Borealis’ forms small, spiky green rosettes with leaf tips that can show orange to burgundy tones, especially in bright sun. This variety is known as a “roller” type because it produces round offsets on thin stolons that easily detach and roll away before rooting nearby. Even though each rosette stays quite small, the plant spreads quickly by producing many new offsets.
Like other Hens & Chicks, it grows best outdoors in full sun where it can keep a tight rosette shape and strong color. Plant it in gritty, well-draining soil and containers with drainage holes. Most growth happens in spring and summer, and the plant can be watered about once a week during the growing season if the weather is very warm. It is extremely frost hardy and can survive winter under snow, but it should be protected from heavy rain and standing water to prevent rot.

  • Filtered / Partial Sun, Full Sun.
Gritty, well-draining soil is essential. Use a cactus and succulent mix with 70%-80% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite.

Water infrequently. Allow soil to dry out completely between waterings. Avoid letting water sit in the rosette to prevent rot.
