Sempervivum Emerald Swirl
-
Emerald Swirl is a perennial succulent belonging to the "Hen and Chicks" family. It forms low-growing, perfectly circular rosettes. The leaves are thick, pointed, and arranged in a dense spiral pattern. Its color is a vibrant, glossy emerald green that often develops deep burgundy or chocolate-red tips, especially during cooler months or when exposed to bright sun.
The Sempervivum genus is native to the mountainous regions of Europe (specifically the Alps and Pyrenees) and Northern Africa. The 'Emerald Swirl' cultivar is a modern hybrid bred for enhanced color stability, disease resistance, and a more pronounced "swirling" leaf structure.
In summer, a mature rosette will shoot up a thick, leafy stalk topped with star-shaped flowers. The flowers are typically a soft rose-pink to reddish-purple, providing a beautiful contrast to the green foliage.
-
Full sun to partial shade.
Gritty, well-draining soil. Thrives in rocky or sandy mixes with low organic matter.
Water only when the soil is completely dry. Extremely drought-tolerant; prone to rot if kept damp.
Feed lightly once or twice during the growing season with a diluted, low-nitrogen fertilizer. Overfeeding can cause leggy growth and weaken the plant.
Non-toxic to humans, cats, and dogs.
