Sempervivum 'Averil'
-
Sempervivum ‘Averil’ (Smits) is a tidy and charming hens and chicks variety with a rosette that shifts from fresh green to warm burgundy tones. Its long, narrow leaves are covered in soft, silvery hairs that give the plant a fuzzy, slightly frosted look, especially when the light hits just right. The rosette stays neat and well shaped, making it easy to mix with other Sempervivum in the garden.
Hens and Chicks are classic outdoor succulents that love bright sunlight and open spaces. ‘Averil’ shows its best color and keeps a tight rosette when grown in full sun and gritty, well draining soil. Like many non heuffelii varieties, it produces baby plants on slender stolons, which slowly spread out from the mother rosette to form natural, well spaced clusters.
-
Full sun to partial sun
Gritty, well-draining soil is essential. Use a cactus and succulent mix with 50%-70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite.
Water infrequently. Allow soil to dry out completely between waterings. Avoid letting water sit in the rosette to prevent rot.
Non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses (Pet-friendly).
