Sempervivum heuffelii 'Artemis'
-
Sempervivum 'Artemis' or Sempervivum heuffelii 'Artemis' is a beautifully balanced hens and chicks variety with a tidy rosette that shifts from soft pink and purple tones to deeper, moodier shades as the seasons change. Subtle copper undertones add warmth to the coloring, while a fine layer of soft fuzz and a clean white outline of cilia along the leaf edges give the plant a refined, almost glowing look. As winter sets in, the entire rosette turns a rich, deep purple that really stands out in the garden.
Sempervivum heuffelii come from mountainous regions of Eastern Europe, where they are naturally adapted to cold temperatures, strong sun, and rocky soil. ‘Artemis’ is especially appreciated for its strong seasonal color and dependable, compact form.
Like other heuffelii, this variety does not spread by runners. Instead, the mother plant slowly divides into new rosettes, forming a neat cluster over time. These rosettes can be left together for a full, natural look or carefully separated and transplanted. After several years, a mature rosette may bloom with yellow flowers and then fade, but its offsets will continue growing.
-
Full sun to partial shade.
Gritty, well-draining soil. Thrives in rocky or sandy mixes with low organic matter.
Water only when the soil is completely dry. Extremely drought-tolerant; prone to rot if kept damp.
Feed lightly once or twice during the growing season with a diluted, low-nitrogen fertilizer. Overfeeding can cause leggy growth and weaken the plant.
Non-toxic to humans, cats, and dogs.
