Roadkill Cactus

  • Roadkill Cactus (Consolea rubescens) is an unusual cactus with a tall, trunk-like stem that branches into flattened paddles. The paddles are slightly bumpy and can appear dark green to purple, especially in strong sunlight. The plant may have variable spines along the paddles, giving it a rugged, wild look. In its natural habitat in the Caribbean, it can grow into a large tree-like cactus.
Mature plants can produce colorful blooms in shades of red, orange, or yellow during the growing season. It grows best in bright sunlight with very well-draining soil and infrequent watering. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. This cactus can also be propagated from paddle cuttings, which root readily when placed in dry, gritty soil.

  • Bright Indoor Light, Full Sun.
Gritty, well-draining soil is essential. Use a cactus and succulent mix with 70%-80% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite.

Water infrequently. Allow soil to dry out completely between waterings. Avoid letting water sit in the rosette to prevent rot.
