Rebutia Perplexa Pink Crown Cactus
-
Rebutia perplexa is a charming, miniature clumping cactus. It features small, cylindrical to globular green stems covered in very short, soft, yellowish-brown spines that don't "bite" as hard as larger cacti. It is famous for its "carpeting" growth habit, quickly forming a dense mound of tiny, pebble-like stems that look like a living sculpture.
This little wonder is native to the high-altitude regions of Bolivia. Specifically, it is found in the rocky terrain of the Chuquisaca Department. Because it originates from mountainous regions, it is hardier and more tolerant of cooler temperatures than many tropical cacti.
The "specialty" of this plant is undoubtedly its bloom. In late spring and early summer, the plant becomes almost completely hidden under a blanket of vibrant, funnel-shaped pink flowers. Unlike many cacti that bloom from the top, Rebutia flowers emerge from the base or sides of the stems, creating a "ring of fire" or a crown-like effect that is truly spectacular.
-
Bright Indirect Light to Full Sun. Needs high light to produce its famous flower display.
Very Gritty Cactus Mix. Prefers a mineral-heavy soil with plenty of pumice or coarse sand to ensure fast drainage.
Typical Soak and Dry. Water well during the growing season (spring/summer), but keep it completely dry in the winter to encourage blooming. -
9b to 11. Must be protected from hard freezes.
