Philodendron 'Tortum'
-
The Philodendron 'Tortum' is a show-stopping species that looks more like a prehistoric fern or a palm than a typical Philodendron. A relatively recent discovery in the houseplant hobby, it has quickly become a favorite for those who love "architectural" plants. Its deeply lobed, skeleton-like leaves give it an airy, spindly silhouette that adds incredible texture to any plant collection.
Native to the tropical forest floors of Brazil, where it thrives in the dappled light of the jungle canopy.
Like many rare Philodendrons, the 'Tortum' is a member of the Araceae family and produces an inflorescence known as a spathe and spadix. While rare to see indoors, the bloom typically features a waxy, hooded leaf (the spathe) that protects the flower spike. However, the true "flower" of this plant is widely considered to be its remarkable, multi-fingered foliage.
-
Bright, indirect light. It mimics the "dappled" light of the forest floor. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can crisp the thin, delicate leaflets.
Dry-down method. Water only when the top 3–4 inches of soil are dry. Pour slowly until water drains from the bottom to ensure the root ball is fully hydrated.
Chunky & Well-Draining. A dedicated aroid mix is best. Use a blend of orchid bark, perlite, and potting soil to ensure maximum oxygen to the roots.
18°C – 27°C (65°F – 80°F). It loves warmth and high humidity. Keep it away from cold windows during winter.
This plant should be fertilized once during the growing season (spring/summer) with diluted houseplant fertilizer.
Toxic. Contains calcium oxalate crystals. It is harmful if ingested by pets or humans; keep it on a high shelf or stable table.
-
Zones 9-11. Primarily kept as an indoor specimen in most climates.
