Philodendron 'Sun Red'
-
The Philodendron ‘Sun Red’ is a vibrant, self-heading tropical beauty that brings a dramatic pop of color to any indoor space. Unlike many climbing Philodendrons, 'Sun Red' grows in a compact, upright mound, making it an ideal choice for tabletops, shelves, and desks.
The hallmark of the 'Sun Red' is its chameleon-like foliage. New leaves emerge in a brilliant, fiery red. As they age, they transition into a deep burgundy or red-purple before finally maturing into a rich, leathery green. Because it is a self-heading variety, it maintains a tidy, bushy shape and does not require a moss pole or trellis to stay upright.
Like most Philodendrons, 'Sun Red' can produce a spathe and spadix (the typical "cobra-like" flower). However, it rarely blooms as a houseplant. The true "flowers" are tiny and located on the spadix, tucked inside the colorful leaf-like spathe. Its decorative value remains almost entirely in its stunning, multi-colored leaves.
-
Bright, indirect light. Stronger (indirect) light helps maintain the vibrant red color of the new growth.
Water when the top 50% of the soil is dry. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
A loose, well-draining potting mix. Use a combination of peat moss, perlite, and pine bark.
65°F – 80°F (18°C – 27°C). Keep away from AC vents and cold winter drafts.
-
9 - 11 (Best kept indoors in cooler climates).
