Peperomia 'Watermelon Variegated'
-
The Peperomia 'Watermelon Variegated' is a stunning cultivar of Peperomia argyreia, often called Watermelon Peperomia or Watermelon Begonia (though it is not a true Begonia). The species P. argyreia is native to the tropical regions of South America, primarily Brazil, where it grows under the canopy of larger plants.
The star of this plant is its eye-catching foliage. Each round, tear-drop-shaped leaf is beautifully patterned with curved, silvery-white and dark green stripes, uncannily resembling the rind of a tiny watermelon. This variegated pattern is especially vibrant in the 'Variegated' form.
Like most Peperomia, its blooms are not particularly showy. It produces small, greenish, spike-like flowers (often described as resembling mouse tails) that rise slightly above the foliage on reddish stalks, typically appearing in the summer.
-
Bright, Indirect Light is ideal to maintain vibrant leaf color. Avoid direct, harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. Tolerates medium light, but variegation may fade in low light.
Allow the top half to one inch of soil to dry out between waterings. It is sensitive to overwatering. Water less frequently in winter.
Well-draining, airy potting mix.
Prefers average indoor temperatures between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
This plant should be fertilized once during the growing season (spring/summer) with diluted houseplant fertilizer.
Non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a safe choice for pet-friendly homes.
