Nematanthus Black Goldfish Plant

  •  The Nematanthus 'Black Goldfish' is a whimsical and elegant trailing houseplant that brings a touch of the tropics into any room. Known for its dark, waxy foliage and flowers that look like they belong in an aquarium, it is a sturdy favorite for both beginners and seasoned plant parents.

This plant is native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil, where it grows naturally as an epiphyte (clinging to trees rather than sitting in deep soil). While standard goldfish plants are bright green, the 'Black' variety features exceptionally dark, glossy, mirror-like leaves. The undersides often have a deep burgundy tint, providing a dramatic contrast to the bright orange flowers.

The true showstopper is the bloom. These pouch-shaped, tubular flowers are typically a vibrant orange or reddish-orange. Their unique shape - complete with a "belly" - looks exactly like a tiny goldfish jumping through the dark green "waves" of the foliage. With proper light, these "fish" can appear on and off all year long.

  • Prefers bright, indirect light. Morning sun is great, but harsh afternoon rays can burn the leaves. Too little light results in leggy stems and no flowers.

Requires a well-draining, airy potting mix. Use an African Violet mix or a blend of peat, perlite, and orchid bark.

Drought-resistant but thrives with consistency. Water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Avoid soggy roots to prevent rot.

    Ideal range is 18°C - 27°C (65°F - 80°F). Avoid cold drafts or temperatures below 10°C (50°F).

Thrives between 18°C and 24°C (65°F - 75°F). Keep away from cold drafts or AC vents; if it gets too cold, it may drop its leaves.

Great news for pet owners! This plant is non-toxic to cats and dogs.

  • USDA Hardiness: Best grown indoors globally; however, it can live outdoors year-round in USDA Zones 10-11.
