Monstera 'Peru'
-
The Monstera 'Peru' is a showstopper for those who love texture over size. Unlike the famous Monstera deliciosa, this plant doesn't produce fenestrations (holes); instead, it captivates with its incredibly thick, puckered, and leathery foliage.
Monstera 'Peru', often sold under the name Monstera karstenianum, is a rare epiphytic climber belonging to the Araceae family. It is native to the tropical rainforests of Peru and Central America. In its natural habitat, it uses its aerial roots to scramble up trees, seeking light under the canopy.
Like most Monsteras, it can produce a "spathe and spadix" flower (similar to a Peace Lily), but this is extremely rare when grown indoors. The plant is almost exclusively grown for its spectacular foliage.
-
Bright, indirect light. It can tolerate medium light, but the leaves will stay smaller and growth will slow.
Low to Moderate. Allow the top 50-75% of the soil to dry out. Its thick leaves make it somewhat drought-tolerant.
Requires a very chunky, well-draining mix. Use a blend of orchid bark, perlite, and premium potting soil.
Thrives between 65°F and 85°F (18°C - 29°C). Protect it from cold drafts below 60°F.
This plant should be fertilized once during the growing season (spring/summer) with diluted houseplant fertilizer.
-
Zones 10-12 (Grown indoors globally).
