Maranta Variegated 'Beauty Kim'

  • The Maranta Variegated 'Beauty Kim' (Maranta leuconeura 'Beauty Kim') is a tropical, evergreen herbaceous perennial with a creeping, mounding growth habit. It is famous for the phenomenon called nyctinasty, where its leaves fold up at night, resembling hands in prayer, and open again in the morning.

The 'Beauty Kim' is distinguished by its spectacular variegation. Its medium green, oval leaves are blotched and splotched with random patterns of creamy white or light yellow, often alongside the characteristic chocolate-brown spots found on the standard M. leuconeura varieties. This vibrant, irregular patterning makes each leaf a unique work of art.

This plant produces small, inconspicuous white or pale greenish flowers on slender stalks, but the plant is primarily grown for its foliage. Flowering is common but less important than the leaf coloration.

  • Bright, indirect light is best. More light is required than non-variegated Marantas to maintain the vibrant white/yellow patterns. Crucially, avoid direct sunlight, which will scorch the delicate leaves and cause the colors to fade.

Keep the soil consistently moist. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Use filtered, distilled, or rainwater as this plant is sensitive to the minerals and chemicals in tap water, which can cause brown leaf tips.

Use a rich, well-draining potting mix that retains moisture without becoming soggy.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F (18°C to 27°C).
