Maranta Red Prayer

  • The Red Prayer Plant is a tropical evergreen perennial belonging to the Marantaceae family. Native to the Brazilian tropical rainforests, it naturally grows on the forest floor, spreading horizontally in crowded clumps. Its common name, "Prayer Plant," comes from a fascinating phenomenon called nyctinasty.

The most distinctive and special feature of the Red Prayer Plant is its daily leaf movement. The plant's leaves lie flat during the day, taking in sunlight for photosynthesis. As evening approaches, the leaves fold upward, resembling hands clasped in prayer. This movement, a natural response to light changes, adds a dynamic and interactive element to the plant, making it a favorite among enthusiasts.

The Red Prayer Plant is a slow-growing plant, reaching a mature size of about 6 to 12 inches in height and width. This makes it an excellent choice for smaller spaces or as a decorative pot or hanging basket plant.

For the Cow Pot Option - These pots are 100% biodegradable and plantable, crafted entirely from composted cow manure to nourish your soil as they disappear.

  •  The Red Prayer Plant thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. Direct sun can scorch and bleach the leaves, causing the vibrant patterns to fade.

Water your plant every 1-2 weeks, allowing the top half of the soil to dry out between waterings. The plant is sensitive to hard tap water, which can cause brown leaf tips. Using filtered water, distilled water, or letting tap water sit out overnight can help.

Use a well-draining, humus-rich potting mix. A standard houseplant mix with added perlite and/or orchid bark will provide the right balance of moisture retention and drainage. The soil should be kept consistently moist but not soggy to prevent root rot.

The plant prefers warm, consistent temperatures between 65°F and 85°F (18°C - 29°C). It is sensitive to cold drafts and temperatures below 60°F (15°C) can cause damage.

The Red Prayer Plant is non-toxic to both humans and pets, making it a safe choice for homes with children and animals.
