Hoya 'Crassipetiolata'
-
The Hoya 'Crassipetiolata' is a sophisticated member of the wax plant family, highly coveted for its prominent veining and incredible ability to change color. It is a robust climber that brings a structural, jungle-like feel to any indoor space.
Native to the tropical forests of Vietnam and Thailand, Hoya crassipetiolata is an epiphytic evergreen vine. In the wild, it uses its adventitious roots to climb tree trunks toward the canopy. It belongs to the Apocynaceae family and is known for its thick, leathery leaves that store water efficiently.
It produces clusters of small, star-shaped flowers that are typically creamy-white to pale yellow with a slight pinkish center. They have a mild, sweet fragrance, particularly at night.
-
Bright, indirect light. To achieve red/purple colors, provide a few hours of gentle morning sun (acclimate slowly).
Allow the potting medium to dry out almost completely between waterings. It is drought-tolerant.
Needs an extra-airy, "chunky" mix. Use orchid bark, perlite, and charcoal with a small amount of coco coir.
Thrives between 65°F and 85°F (18°C - 29°C). It does not like cold feet; keep above 55°F.
This plant should be fertilized once during the growing season (spring/summer) with diluted houseplant fertilizer.
Like most Hoyas, it is generally considered non-toxic to pets, though ingesting the milky sap can cause minor stomach upset.
-
Zones 10-11 (Indoor only in cooler climates).
