Euphorbia flanaganii Medusa Head Cactus
-
Euphorbia flanaganii, famously known as the Medusa’s Head, is a fascinating "caudiciform" succulent. It features a short, thick central stem (the caudex) from which numerous long, slender, snake-like green branches emerge. These "arms" spread out and trail, mimicking the hair of the mythical Greek monster, Medusa.
This striking species hails from the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. In its native habitat, it grows nestled in rocky soil, often with its central hub partially buried to protect itself from the sun, while its arms stretch out to catch the light.
The architectural silhouette of the Euphorbia flanaganii is unlike any other plant. It is a living sculpture. Because it grows low and wide, it looks spectacular in "head-shaped" planters where its branches can spill over the sides like real hair.
-
Bright, indirect sun. It loves light but can be scorched by intense, direct afternoon sun.
Very well-draining. Use a gritty cactus mix with plenty of pumice or perlite to prevent "center rot."
Moderate in summer, dry in winter. Water when the soil is dry to the touch, but never let it sit in standing water. -
9b – 11. Not frost-hardy. Must be brought indoors if temperatures drop below 4°C.
