The leaves are slightly keeled and grow along branching stems, giving the plant a more open and spreading shape compared to tight rosette types. If left to grow freely, it can reach about 8 inches tall, creating a loose, sculptural form. 
This plant grows steadily and can branch as it matures. In spring or summer, it may send up a tall flower stalk with pink to yellow, bell-shaped blooms. Native to central Mexico, it is admired for its dramatic leaf markings and colorful seasonal flowers.
