Crassula Jade Necklace
-
Crassula 'Jade Necklace' (often confused with its smaller cousin 'Baby Necklace') is a captivating hybrid succulent. It features thick, rounded, disc-like leaves that are stacked tightly along thin stems, resembling a string of jade beads or a structural necklace. When "stressed" by sun or cool temperatures, the leaf margins turn a beautiful shade of rosy red or deep wine.
This plant is a hybrid, typically a cross between Crassula marnieriana and Crassula perfoliata var. falcata. Its lineage traces back to South Africa, where Crassulas have adapted to rocky crevices and arid landscapes, making this plant exceptionally hardy.
Its geometric growth habit is its standout feature. Unlike many succulents that grow in a flat rosette, the 'Jade Necklace' grows vertically in "columns" before cascading. It is the perfect "spiller" for succulent arrangements, adding height and architectural interest that looks like living jewelry.
-
Bright, filtered sun. It needs several hours of light to keep the "beads" tight. In low light, the stems will stretch (etiolate).
Well-draining grit. A mix of 50% potting soil and 50% pumice or perlite is ideal.
Low. Use the "soak and dry" method. Only water when the leaves feel slightly soft to the touch or the soil is bone dry. -
9 – 11. It is not cold-hardy and should be kept indoors if temperatures drop below 10°C.
