Calathea 'Orbifolia'

  • The Calathea 'Orbifolia' is a show-stopping tropical gem that acts as a living piece of art for your home. Known for its oversized, rounded leaves that look as if they’ve been meticulously hand-painted with silver-green stripes, it is one of the most popular members of the "prayer plant" family.

Beyond its air-purifying qualities, the Orbifolia is famous for its "nyctinasty" behavior. Like other prayer plants, its leaves move upward at night and lower during the day to catch the light. The sheer size of the leaves - which can reach over a foot wide - makes it a dramatic focal point compared to other smaller Calathea varieties.

In its natural habitat, the Orbifolia can produce small, star-shaped white flowers on stalks. However, it is extremely rare for this plant to bloom indoors. The "flower" of this plant is really its foliage - the massive, metallic-sheen leaves are the true stars of the show!

  • Bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which will scorch the delicate silver markings and burn the leaves.

Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. Use filtered or distilled water if possible, as they are sensitive to fluoride in tap water.

A well-draining, peat-based potting mix. A blend of orchid bark, perlite, and potting soil works wonders.

65°F to 80°F (18°C–27°C). They are sensitive to cold drafts and sudden temperature drops.

Pet-Friendly! Non-toxic to both cats and dogs.

  • 10–11 (Typically grown as an indoor perennial).
