Austrocylindropuntia cylindrica Cactus

  •  Austrocylindropuntia cylindrica is a bold, shrubby cactus with an upright, branching growth habit that gives it a strong, sculptural presence. The plant is made up of thick, cylindrical stem segments that branch freely as they grow, creating a dense, tree-like form over time. The stems are a deep green color and are covered with distinct, diamond-shaped tubercles, each dotted with white areoles and short white spines.

Near the tips of the stems, you may notice tiny, awl-shaped leaves up to about half an inch long, adding an unusual detail rarely seen on most cacti. When in bloom, this species produces striking red flowers that can reach up to 3 inches in length, standing out vividly against the dark green stems. In its natural habitat, Austrocylindropuntia cylindrica can grow into an impressive plant, eventually reaching heights of up to 13 feet.

  • Bright Indoor Light, Full Sun.
Gritty, well-draining soil is essential. Use a cactus and succulent mix with 50%-70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite.

Water infrequently. Allow soil to dry out completely between waterings. Avoid letting water sit in the rosette to prevent rot.
