Amydrium 'Silver' (Spiderman Monstera)
-
The Amydrium medium 'Silver' is a striking and sought-after rarity in the aroid world. Despite its common name, the "Spiderman Monstera," it is not actually a Monstera at all, but a distinct genus that offers a futuristic, metallic aesthetic for plant collectors.
The "Silver" cultivar is prized for its alligator-skin texture and intense silvery-blue sheen. As the plant matures, the leaves develop dramatic fenestrations (holes) and deep lobes, giving it a skeletal, spider-like appearance. Unlike many aroids that lose their texture as they grow, the Amydrium's puckered "bullate" surface only becomes more pronounced with age.
Like most members of the Araceae family, this plant produces an inflorescence consisting of a spadix and a spathe. In the wild, these are often inconspicuous and greenish-white. However, it is quite rare for this plant to flower indoors; it is almost exclusively grown for its spectacular foliage.
Native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia (including Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia).
-
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the delicate silver pigment. It can tolerate medium light, but the "spider" fenestrations will be less dramatic.
Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy. Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. They enjoy higher humidity (60%+), which mimics their native rainforest habitat.
Requires a well-draining, chunky aroid mix. A blend of orchid bark, perlite, coco coir, and charcoal is ideal to ensure the roots can breathe.
Monstera deliciosa thrives in temperatures between 65°F - 80°F. As a tropical houseplant with huge foliage, it needs a high humidity level (ideally at least 50% all year round). Use a humidifier and mist your plant when the weather is dry, especially during winter.
Thrives in warm environments between 65°F and 85°F (18°C - 29°C). Protect it from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F.
