Agave kerchovei ‘Huajuapan Red’

  • Agave kerchovei ‘Huajuapan Red’ is a bold and colorful agave with sharp, triangular leaves. The centers of the leaves are rich green, while the tips fade into deep maroon-red, especially in strong sunlight. The edges are lined with small, pointed teeth, and each leaf ends in a firm central spine. Native to Mexico, this variety has a strong, sculptural presence.
This agave grows slowly, especially during spring and summer, forming a tight rosette. Over time, it can produce offsets, or “pups,” around the base, which can be separated and replanted. Mature plants may eventually send up a tall flower stalk. Propagation is easy from the pups once they are large enough to remove.

  •  Full Sun.
Gritty, well-draining soil is essential. Use a cactus and succulent mix with 70%-80% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite.

Water infrequently. Allow soil to dry out completely between waterings. Avoid letting water sit in the rosette to prevent rot.
